Celebrating Alabama’s Strongest Foundations – Our Families

Since 1959, the Family Guidance Center of Alabama has provided comprehensive family services to help improve the quality of life for children, couples, and families in our communities. To recognize the foundation of our communities – the family unit – the Family Guidance Center sponsors the Families of the Year Awards. Families chosen by the Selection Committee will be recognized at an annual Families of the Year Awards Ceremony.

Criteria:

Family Teamwork- Working together in everyday tasks or special challenges such as family crisis, household chores, and family outings.
Individual Growth- Helping each other accomplish personal goals in education, sports, friendship, careers, and special interests.
Family Involvement- Participation in community activities such as church, volunteering, youth activities, athletics, organizations, or other activities.

Rules of Eligibility:

Traditional families, step-families, single parents, and adopted families are eligible for nomination;
Nominated families must live in Central/South Alabama OR the Birmingham area;
Family members need not live under the same roof, but must function as a family, demonstrating the listed criteria;
Nominators may nominate only one family per year; and
Nominated families must agree to the publicity release.

What an incredible day of celebration!

On Sunday, we honored our 2025 Families of the Year - the Dunson and James Families, the Greens, the Lord Family, and the Watson Family.

Congratulations to these amazing families for the love, dedication, and impact you continue to bring to our community!

Donate to Make an Impact

Because staff is not always available to receive donated items, these items can be delivered to the Portage Township Trustee's Office at 3590 Willowcreek Rd, Suite B, Portage, IN 46368. The office is open Mon-Thurs. 8:00 am to 4:00 pm and Fri. 8:00 am - 12:00 pm. Staff will informed that they need to be picked up from the office.

Liquid Hand Soap
Hand Sanitizer
Liquid Laundry Detergent
Liquid Dish Soap (like Dawn, Gain, etc.)
Toilet Paper
Shampoo
Conditioner
Paper Towels
Trash Bags - 30 gallon size

Plungers (multiple needed)
Disinfectant Spray (Microban or Lysol)
Grocery and Gift Cards (Save-A-Lot, Family Dollar, or Dollar Tree cards are very helpful because they are easily accessible for residents and have a good selection of basic need items.)
